Protect Your Computer from E-mail Viruses
-
Keep antivirus software running on your computer.
-
Once you install the software, update the virus definitions frequently. Most
AV software can be set to do this automatically. Or you can download the
definitions from the vendor's web site.
-
Use your antivirus software to scan every file you receive from any source,
even from friends, family, and co-workers, whether it's sent by e-mail,
delivered on diskette, or downloaded from the web or a server.
-
Don't open an e-mail attachment unless you know exactly what it is and trust
the person who sent it. Many viruses arrive as executable files that are
harmless until you tell them to start running.
-
Choose your e-mail program with care and update the program regularly. The
various e-mail programs supplied with browsers, such as Microsoft's Outlook
Express, often contain security holes that can be exploited by viruses.
