Turn on the built-in firewall

If you are running Windows XP on your computer, it is recommended that you turn on the built-in firewall. A computer firewall blocks unnecessary types of internet traffic so that viruses cannot gain easy access to your computer.

To do so, click on the Start button, go to "Connect To" until it is highlighted. Right click on the internet connection you use. Click on Properties, click on the "Advanced" tab. Under the first area called "Internet Connection Firewall" click on the box next to "protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the internet" to put a check mark there to turn the firewall on. Click on Ok.

To turn it off click on the same box to take the check mark out.
